Today we started our Book Clubs and the students met with their book clubs for the first time.  Some of the book clubs are reading fiction and others are reading non-fiction.  Each book club member will be keeping a journal and completing assignments in their Book Club Journal.  Throughout their participation in these book clubs students will be discussing the books they read together and creating projects that we will post on our class web site.

Dear Parents,

I encourage you to ask your child about their book club experiences.  Here are some sample questions you can use and some creative ideas.

Questions for Fiction books:

Who are the characters in the story?

What is the setting?

What are some of the problems in the story?

What connections do you have to the story or characters?

What is the main idea?

How have the characters changed in the story?

Questions for Non-Fiction books:

What facts have you learned from this book?

Are you interested in learning more about something you read in the book?

What was the most interesting part of the book?

What new words did you learn during your reading?

How did the pictures in the book help your understanding?

If you want your child to be creative...

Ask them to draw you a picture about something they read in the book and have them describe and explain the picture to you.  If they are reading a fiction book let them act out a part of the story by pretending to be a character in the book.  If they are reading non-fiction let them create a poster about the book.
